RENT! Live

I have been a fan of the movie musical since I watched it when I was 7 on Christmas eve. It has been considered a Christmas movie in my household. We watch it every year and sing along to the songs. You can imagine how excited we were to hear that Fox would be putting on its own live version of Rent. It's been 22 years since the show's debut on Broadway. Rent is a rock musical with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson. Who tragically passed away from Aids right before the show's off Broadway premier. Rent is now a musical lovers favorite along with other classics. But, I am sad to say that this production of Rent was disappointing. I applaud the fact that they attempted to do this production in the round but it did make it more difficult to fully enjoy the show cause you felt dizzy due to the zoom in's and zoom out's and spinning. The casting choices were also ….interesting. Vanessa Hudgens did a pretty amazing job considering her background. She played a character that is extremely provocative and she did it well. I had totally forgot that she had played Gabrielle in High School Musical. But, I can't say the same of her counter part. Kiersey Clemons even though she is talented. I don't think she is right for this part. I think that happened to a lot of the cast. They are definitely talented just not meant for the part. I would love to see more of Brandon Victor Dixon. He was amazing as Tom Collin. His voice was very impressive. I can't wait to see more from him. Jordan Fisher and Brennin Hunt were great as best friends. I also enjoy that the original cast came to sing and I almost was brought to tears. But, I hope Fox in the future does much better in the future.
